Using Face ID & Touch ID on Your iPad

Your iPad can recognize your face or fingerprint to unlock! This is much faster than typing a passcode every time, and it's super secure too.

What's the difference?

Face ID uses the camera to recognize your face.
Touch ID uses the fingerprint sensor to recognize your finger.

Different iPad models have one or the other - never both!

Setting Up Face ID

If your iPad has a full screen with no Home button, it probably has Face ID!

Open Settings

Tap the Settings app on your home screen.

Find Face ID

Scroll down and tap "Face ID & Passcode".

Enter Passcode

Type in your iPad passcode when asked.

Set Up Face ID

Tap "Set Up Face ID" and follow the instructions.

Scan Your Face

Hold your iPad so your face is in the circle and slowly move your head around.

Complete Second Scan

After the first scan, you'll do a second one to help your iPad recognize you better.

Setting Up Touch ID

If your iPad has a Home button at the bottom of the screen, it probably has Touch ID!

Open Settings

Tap the Settings app on your home screen.

Find Touch ID

Scroll down and tap "Touch ID & Passcode".

Enter Passcode

Type in your iPad passcode when asked.

Add a Fingerprint

Tap "Add a Fingerprint" and follow the instructions.

Scan Your Finger

Place your finger on the Home button repeatedly, lifting it slightly between scans.

Scan Edges

Scan the edges of your fingerprint when asked to get a complete scan.

Add More Fingerprints!

You can add up to 5 fingerprints to Touch ID. Try adding both thumbs and both index fingers to make it easy to unlock your iPad no matter how you're holding it!

Using Face ID or Touch ID

Unlocking Your iPad - For Face ID, just look at your iPad. For Touch ID, rest your finger on the Home button.
Passwords - Your iPad can fill in passwords for websites and apps using Face ID or Touch ID.

Tips for Better Recognition

For Face ID:

Hold at the Right Distance - Hold your iPad about 10-20 inches (25-50 cm) from your face.
Look Directly at It - Face ID works best when you look directly at the screen.
Remove Masks or Sunglasses - These can make it harder for Face ID to recognize you.
Good Lighting - Face ID works better in good lighting conditions.
Update Your Appearance - If you change how you look a lot (like growing a beard), you might need to set up an "Alternate Appearance" in Face ID settings.

For Touch ID:

Clean Fingers - Make sure your finger and the Home button are clean and dry.
Use the Pad of Your Finger - Use the flat part of your fingertip, not just the very tip.
Different Angles - Register the same finger multiple times but at slightly different angles.
Avoid Cold Environments - Touch ID might have trouble in very cold weather.

Safety First!

If someone asks to use your Face ID or Touch ID and you don't want to share, quickly press the Power button five times in a row. This disables Face ID/Touch ID until you enter your passcode!

Face ID and Touch ID make your iPad both more secure and easier to use. No more forgetting passwords or typing long passcodes - your iPad recognizes you instantly!
