Keep Your iPad Safe and Private
Your iPad has lots of your personal stuff on it. Here's how to keep it safe from people who shouldn't see it:
Privacy Controls
See What Apps Are Doing
Find out what apps are looking at on your iPad:
- Go to Settings > Privacy > App Privacy Report
- See which apps looked at where you are, your photos, used your camera, microphone, or contacts
- See what websites apps are talking to
Location Settings
Control which apps know where you are:
- Go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services
- Choose "Never," "Ask Next Time," "While Using," or "Always" for each app
- Turn off "Precise Location" if an app doesn't need to know exactly where you are
Camera and Microphone
Control which apps can see and hear you:
- Go to Settings > Privacy > Microphone/Camera
- Turn on or off for each app
- Look for green (camera) or orange (microphone) dots at the top of your screen to know when they're being used
Stop Apps From Following You
Stop apps from watching what you do in other apps:
- Go to Settings > Privacy > Tracking
- Turn off "Allow Apps to Request to Track" to stop all apps from following what you do
- Or choose which apps can follow you and which can't
Password Safety
- Remember Passwords for You - Let your iPad remember all your passwords so you don't have to. Turn on in Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > Keychain.
- Know If Your Password Is Stolen - Your iPad will tell you if your password has been stolen. Check in Settings > Passwords > Security Recommendations.
- Extra Security Code - Use a second code that gets sent to your phone when you sign in to make sure it's really you.
- Use Your Face or Fingerprint - Let your iPad recognize your face or fingerprint instead of typing passwords all the time.
Important Tip!
Always use different passwords for different apps and websites. Your iPad can make up strong passwords for you and remember them! Never use the same password in more than one place.
More Safety Tips
- Keep Your iPad Updated - Always update your iPad when it asks you to. Updates fix security problems.
- Turn On Find My iPad - If you lose your iPad, you can find it on a map, lock it, or erase it. Set up in Settings > [Your Name] > Find My. Should you misplace your device, you can also access Find My through the iCloud website from any computer. Please note that your Apple ID password will be required to log in. This service is invaluable for locating lost devices.
- Control What Shows When Locked - Choose what people can see and do when your iPad is locked in Settings > Face ID/Touch ID & Passcode.
- Check App Permissions - Every few months, check which apps have permission to use your camera, location, etc. and turn off ones that don't need it.
Private Web Browsing
- Secret Browsing - Tap the tabs button in Safari and select "Private" to browse without saving your history.
- Block Ads - Install ad blockers from the App Store and turn them on in Settings > Safari > Extensions.
- Stop Websites From Following You - Turn on privacy settings in Settings > Safari > Privacy & Security so websites can't track you.
- Hide Your Address - Turn on Hide IP Address in Safari settings so websites can't see where you're browsing from.
Using these easy safety tips will help keep your private information safe on your iPad!
